Why you should know Storyville Entertainment President Betsy Schechter

Betsy Schechter, President, Storyville Entertainment, NYC

Betsy Schechter, President, Storyville Entertainment, NYC

Betsy Schechter is President of Storyville Entertainment, a New York based full-service production company dedicated to creating top-tier content for television, film, branded and multimedia outlets. With nearly 20 years of television experience, Schechter has produced over two dozen projects across all genres including five seasons of the breakout hit “Paranormal State” (A&E), the nationally syndicated dating show Shipmates, and the scripted series “Warren The Ape,” as well as the Emmy-nominated “Miracle at Trapper Creek”(ABC).

Betsy is unique in that she’s both a producer, business woman and a yoga teacher. Betsy is proof that it’s possible to create a successful business without sacrificing health or piece of mind and that a healthy bottom line can go hand in hand with a happy, healthy workforce. Betsy offers everything from weekly yoga classes for her staffers, encouraging employees to bring their pets to work and invites special guests to lunch to reflect on their careers. It’s a very progressive and mindful approach for a production company (most of which operate like robot shops!).

Q: How did you get started in entertainment?
BS: I interned which is why I implemented an internship program here at Storyville Entertainment. My first internship was at CNN in Atlanta, which opened my eyes to the world. I saw firsthand while I was in school what was happening at CNN and that got me interested in storytelling. It was exciting to me.

Q: Your experience as an intern was so great that you ensured your company had one?
BS: Yes. We have a program at Storyville for our interns where we have speakers come in and they get to talk to each one of them at the beginning of the program.. We want our interns to have a well-rounded experience with us and instill in them that what they’re doing is important and how it’s helping our company. When they leave they are appreciative that they were able to actively participate. I recently hired one of our interns who just graduated to be my assistant.

Q: How do you feel about the New Media landscape with people being able to create their own media companies or the potential to and jump onto an MCN?
BS: I think it’s great when you have creativity and the ability to do things. Good things rise to the top. It makes more opportunities for everyone, so I think it is very positive.

Q: How do you feel about the new way to produce content that is being created by non-traditional entertainment studios, like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Studios?
BS: I love it because it gives us more opportunities. As a company I’m constantly thinking outside of the box and how to approach my business in a non-traditional way. To have opportunities to go to companies like Netflix and to be able to have other sources and other ways of telling stories is fantastic. You still have to have a great product though.

Q: You are approaching entertainment in a different and creative ways. What is your process?
BS: First and foremost, it has to be something that we’re excited about developing. Development is a long process, so regardless if anyone buys the project, you need to feel satisfied that you are happy with the end result. You can put a lot of your heart and soul into these things. Then, I take it and say what is the best format for it? For example, we had a non-scripted project with a great character. We actually wound up using the character as inspiration for a scripted project and we wound up getting a writer attached to it and now it’s morphed into a scripted show. We looked at it from all angles and realized a story can lead you more places than one. You look at the actual idea, person or personality from a 360 perspective and slice it up to see where it could fit.

Q: What is the future of television?
BS: I think it’s going to be a lot of different places, but the definition is going to change a little. There’s a lot of great programming out there and really high-end things and people taking chances. It’s an exciting world and maybe it’s shifting a little, but it’s still out there and people are watching it. You see more opportunities and shows that come out on television in different ways, like “Mad Men.”

Q: Women breaking the glass ceiling is difficult in most industries. Do you think there have been significant improvements in the industry?
BS: There have been improvements. There are a lot more women running networks now and there are more women decision makers and even more writers. Though I don’t think there are enough yet. Women themselves have to take the chances to be motivated and not be afraid. Women have to have a fearless kind of approach. There are a lot of organizations that are helpful, and women helping other women is also helping to break through. I think that more women should take the risk of starting their own companies and not be afraid of reaching even higher.

Q: What was your experience when you decided to launch Storyville Entertainment?
BS: I had a lot of support from friends in the community and I had other experiences to draw from. I’ve been in many working environments, so I had a solid idea of what I wanted Storyville to look like and how I wanted to create it. I took all of the things that I’d learned from other men, women, and other companies. The biggest challenge was not having everything happen all at the same time. I had to just relax and realize I couldn’t achieve everything on the first day, and that the journey was going to be a part of the process.

I reminded all of my first employees that pressure drains creativity. I made it clear that our goal was to create a great product. And, you’re only as good as the people around you. My mom is in human resources and she instilled in me a strong team effort approach to management – it’s important that your team feels like they are part of something.

Q: When producing content how much is it emotionally driven vs. data driven?
BS: It depends on the project, however, there always has to be a little bit of heart in what we produce. If it’s a documentary, you do have to be a fly on the wall. But, we create programing from feature documentaries to comedies to science shows. No matter what the genre, we put a lot of heart and soul in our projects.

Q: What do you look for when you are looking for new talent?
BS: Authenticity and someone who has as much passion about whatever you become passionate about. It’s like those great teachers who taught you and made you interested in subjects that you thought you wouldn’t be interested in – it’s the way they expressed themselves. I look for worlds we haven’t seen, and even common places but taken into through a different approach.

I also look for good stories on both sides. It’s like a marriage – you’re going to be spending time with these people and you want to make sure it’s enjoyable for everyone. It’s a mutual decision and you have to be respectful of their time. Nothing is always going to go perfect and you want to ensure that everyone is going to communicate. If you’re trying to do something great and everyone gets on the right path together it makes the ride much easier. We have a lot of great people that we work with and that work here who are passionate, but we try to keep a balanced environment so that everyone has the time and energy to do the stuff that we’re doing

Q: Tell me about your exciting co-production deal with Converge Media Group (CMG).
BS: As the company is starting out we’re looking for different partnerships and different ways we can create film, television and branded entertainment. Converge Media manages a lot of exciting talent and Rick Dorfman (Partner, CMG) and I have known each other a long time. It’s a nice, symbiotic relationship that we’re developing and we’re already off to the races with fantastic projects.

Q: Why is it that we only have a handful of women like you, who are owners of production companies?
BS: I think that many worry that they won’t be able to have a life outside of the company. There is fear that you can only have one, not the other. However, this next generation graduating from college now will see more women as CEO’s than my generation ever did, and so they perceive it from the beginning that they can have their cake and eat it too.

Q: What advice do you have for young women trying to create their own path?
BS: Look at where you want to be and create that path because it’s possible. And, create strong and supportive relationships with women who are in the business. Even to this day, every few months I get together for dinner with a close group of women that are in entertainment. We laugh, vent, share stories. It’s all part of the process and the camaraderie is a big part of our successes. And, with anything that you want to do you have to believe in yourself. Don’t worry about failure and never be afraid to ask for advice!

Q: What would you like people to know about Storyville Entertainment?
BS: We’re about telling great stories, both visually and literally, across all genres and topics. That said, we’re constantly thinking outside of the box, albeit a different way to approach a topic or a new method of producing with an outlet.

Q: You actually practice what you preach about putting into place Work Life Balance. Many companies talk about it but fail to embrace it in their organization.
BS: I really wanted the workplace to be a mindful experience. I’m a trained Yoga Instructor so it’s important to me that my staff knows that there needs to be a balance between work and life. We have a Yoga Instructor that comes into the office once a week and the class is open to anyone who wants to join. Additionally, I make it a priority to have guest speakers from all walks of life for lunch seminars. Past examples include the General Manager of A&E, a Stress Relief Instructor and a NYC film/TV Professor. It’s a small, casual environment for our guests to share their paths, and it gives my staff an opportunity to not only take a break but also be inspired and learn from others.

I am also an advocate of animals, so we allow pets in the office. And, we even have bake offs! In the end, it’s important that my staff feel like that they can enjoy themselves at work – the more balanced they are, the better the employees and the better their work.

Q: Are there any shows in development that you can share?
BS: We’re excited about all of our relationships with the networks. Currently, we’re producing a 10 episode series called “The Ride” for MTV International that gives fans intimate access to some of the biggest names in music like Linkin Park and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. We’re also producing non-scripted projects for H2, truTV, Oxygen, SyFy and National Geographic as well as a scripted series with Jason Blum, the producer of the successful movie franchise “Paranormal Activity.”

Weylie Hoang: A conversation with YouTube’s leading beauty personality

Weylie Hoang: YouTube's leading beauty personality

Weylie Hoang: YouTube’s leading beauty personality

The YouTube fashion and beauty community is leading the way for many young women to become brands and breakout talent. One of the ladies doing that is Weylie Hoang.

Weylie Hoang is a YouTube beauty personality known as “I Like Weylie.” Hoang has over 1 million subscribers on YouTube and her brand continues to grow. She has appeared on a number of beauty and digital panels such as Idea to Screen’s, Women of YouTube, Spring Forward with the Leading Ladies of Digital Beauty and Playlist Live. A million subscribers is nothing to sneeze at. If you are a regular subscriber of the beauty community on YouTube, there are a lot of questions being asked how these leading ladies were able to grow their channel and their brand.

Weylie shares how she got started and insight to help you grow your channel.

Q: When did you start your channel and what prompted you to start making videos?
WH: I started my channel in September 2007 and I was 15 years old. I was bored at the time and I didn’t have anything better to do. I was watching a lot of other beauty videos and it prompted me to start my own.

Q: When you started on YouTube were people pretty positive?
WH: When I started there were not a lot of people on YouTube and if they were they were not very interactive. They were a lot shyer at the time. Now it seems much more like a social media platform and an immediate connect. Before people would only comment if they had a question about something. The comments were really few compared to today.

Q: How do you deal with the negative comments and what is your advice to others?
WH: At times I do let those negative comments get to me, but for the most part I remind myself that I have to look at this like a career. Just like any job, people are going to disagree with you and people are not going to like 100% of everything that you put out. I keep it in perspective by looking at it very professionally. If someone makes a comment that is negative and I start to take it too personal, I remind myself to look at as my job; that there is always going to be good and bad. If the comments are a little negative I’ll take it into consideration to see maybe if what they’re saying is right and if there is something that I need to reconsider.

Q: When you started your channel and saw that the number of people subscribing to you channel was growing did it surprise or shock you?
WH: I can’t say that I was shocked because I didn’t care about views and I didn’t know what it meant when I was younger. I knew that people were watching; I didn’t focus on that or that it was popular. I didn’t know that it was a big deal at the time.

Q: Who is your inspiration for fashion and beauty?
WH: I don’t have a particular person that I look to. I do like to look at Pinterest and magazines for styles and trends.

Q: YouTube has changed so much since you first launched your channel. What advice or tips can you share with people who aspire to be a beauty vlogger?
WH: You really have to be passionate about it. In this industry you have to be patient about it too, especially when it comes to video editing and filming. You also have to be patient and creative because you’ll lose that patience really quickly. You have to have the time to be creative about what you’re filming.

Q: At 15 when you began on YouTube, what did you think that you wanted to do as a career and is it still the same?
WH: When I was younger there was a mix of a lot of things that I wanted to be. I wanted to be a child psychologist, teacher and a carpenter. I had a lot of things that I wanted to do. I also wanted to have my own beauty brand.

Q: You have many 13-17 years who look up to you. What advice do you have for young girls who are still trying to find their way and social media negativity?
WH: You really have to learn to not care about what people have to say besides your loved ones. You especially have to do that with people over the internet that hide behind their computer saying mean things to try and break you down or because they are jealous or insecure. Rather than getting mad at those people look at it as part of the job – take the good and the bad. You have to feel a little sad for people that go around bashing others because they are probably very troubled.

Q: Many of the beauty vloggers have become entrepreneurs. Do you have plans in the near future to launch your own beauty product or fashion line?
WH: I don’t have that in the works currently, but I would definitely love to launch my own beauty product or fashion line in the future.

Q: What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
WH: I hope that I would still be doing videos, filming YouTube videos and creating content.

Q: What beauty trend are you excited about for Summer 2014?
WH: I’m a huge fan of dresses and I’m really into sandals. Because I live in California I’m really into anything that is really laid back. Dresses and sandals are my thing right now. You can get cute pedicures to go with your sandals and dresses.

Inglot Cosmetics Creative Director Kaye Tuckerman: The Brand that is Affordable Luxury

Inglot Cosmetics Highlighting Powder, Image/Inglot Cosmetics

Inglot Cosmetics Highlighting Powder, Image/Inglot Cosmetics

If you are looking for high quality, great pigmented, long-wearing makeup at an affordable price, look no further than Inglot Cosmetics.

Inglot Cosmetics was founded over 30 years ago in Europe by Wojciech Inglot, a Polish chemist and cosmetics executive who developed a “breathable” nail polish. Inglot Cosmetics is a breakthrough bestselling brand which offers a full range of products with rich color payoff in one application. Their products are long-lasting formulas that will not crease or smudge even under extreme temperatures. Whether you are seeking skin care, foundation, primer, blush, eye shadow, mascara, nail or lip color you can trust that Inglot Cosmetics blends easily and stays put. They also have a wide range of makeup brushes, tools and accessories.

Kaye Tuckerman is Inglot Cosmetics new Creative Director. Tuckerman shares with me her background, her new role as Creative Director and the trends for Summer into Fall 2014 at Inglot Cosmetics.

Your background
I’m Australian and prior to joining Inglot I was a freelancer. I traveled the world doing theatre, film and TV. When I finally got my Green Card I decided to move to New York. Before that I was designing films in Kenya. I was a production designer and art director overseeing wardrobe and makeup for very small low budget local productions and training young art directors. I worked on everything from small local productions to multimillion dollar and high profile campaigns such as Nike and Nokia, feature films and large festivals. My work required that I travel frequently. I would sometimes be in Nairobi, Kilimanjaro or camping out on location at Lake Magadi.

Working with Inglot
I started with Inglot in August 2013. One day I was walking down Times Square at 48th and Broadway and I saw this store (Inglot). It looked very pretty and I decided to go inside. I started playing with the makeup and the mattifying makeup primer. I thought Inglot was an amazing brand which I’d always seen in Europe. Fast forward two years later my friend said he was now working at Inglot and asked if I would be interested in coming on board. I told him that I loved Inglot!

It’s always nice when you end up working for a company that you believe in the quality of their products and its price point. It’s an added bonus when you like the people that you work for and with. All of that is important to me in terms of who I work with. While I didn’t get to meet Mr. Inglot (Founder of Inglot) before he passed, everyone had great things to say about him. He was so passionate about Inglot and the cosmetics industry. It is so lovely when someone has such a passion for something that they develop a brand. Over the years Inglot has become a favorite of many makeup artists in the professional circles and increasingly so with makeup lovers. Certainly at the makeup trade shows the Inglot booth is very popular.

How a theatre background combines well with the Inglot Creative Director role
I used to be a performer and theatre has always been a great passion of mine. I had done a great deal of film and theatre work in Australia. When I moved here to New York City, I started auditioning for Broadway shows. I booked the national Broadway tour of “Mama Mia,” and I was out on the road for two years. Now I’m back in New York.

Working in the arts is such a privileged industry that you can’t just sit back and let the work come to you. I wanted to remain creative and understand the whole process. I wasn’t content just being the actor, singer or dancer. When I was studying directing I got a chance to work on “The Matrix.” Part of my contract to work on that movie was to learn as much as I could about film making, from producing all the way down to art directing, bullet time, wardrobe, hair, makeup and how it all fits together. It’s important in the arts to understand how every party contributes to the bigger picture.

Role as Creative Director at Inglot
As Inglot’s Creative Director I work with the television and film network and theatre communities that need products. I deal with the Broadway shows backstage. If they’re doing a front of the house promotion as well and they want me to design a range of products for their audience members to cross promote, I work with them on that. I also work with the makeup designers for the Broadway shows and work out a way for them to get a palette for the talent that is within their budget so that the actors can have it backstage at their makeup stations. In theatre the actors do their own makeup.

People love the format of Inglot’s “Freedom System” because it’s compact, actors don’t need multiple cosmetics items on the makeup stations backstage. Our makeup will 100% cover whatever the performers are working with whether it is tattoos, skin discoloration or other skin concerns . Makeup artists love it because you’re able to have all of the things that you need in one palette with the “Freedom System.”

As Creative Director my role is to expand the awareness, knowledge and interest of the Inglot brand wherever possible.

Trends for Summer into Fall 2014 at Inglot
Radiant Orchid is the Pantone Color of the Year this season. It’s a poppy, pinky, purple, mauvey color. Inglot has done some really great promotions with that recently. We offer very vibrant, fresh, summery and floral colors for our Spring-Summer 2014 products. We have a collection of beautiful matte lipsticks in the Radiant Orchid shades. The blushes, eye shadows and nail colors that we launched in the collection are gorgeous. They are bright, colorful and long-lasting. We have some great gel eyeliners and pigments if you like adding a pop of color. We have a color play of lip colors that are amazing. There is something for everyone in the Radiant Orchid Pantone range.

What are some Dos & Don’ts?
Do add a Mattifying Powder for summer. Inglot’s Mattifying Powder is made from hybrid silicon polymers made in Japan. It is very high tech and scientific formula. It was designed for excess moisture from humidity, sweating and bright hot lights of TV and film studio sets, theatre and sports players. Anytime you’ve got excess moisture on your skin brush a little bit of the Inglot Mattifying Powder across your face and it just sucks up the excess moisture. You just brush it away and it leaves this refreshed, mild mattified look that’s really awesome.
Do wear bright bold colors. If you go for a blue lip or a bright bold purple lip do a subtler eye. If you have an intense eye do a softer lip so they don’t compete with one another.
Do wear Bronzer. People come in and ask for a bronzer that they can wear all over their face.
Don’t wear bronzer all over your face. That’s a no-no. When you’re thinking bronze, think sun kissed. Load up your brush with a little bronzer and smooth it across the high points of the cheek, tip of the nose, high points of the brow and across the chin. The most prominent features of your face are where the sun will kiss your face. Think sun kissed rather than all over.

Staying in step with technology and the Inglot App
People love immediacy and the Inglot App is allowing consumers to do that. If you’re in the store you can click on the app to let us know, as well as get updates on products. People like to feel connected with the brand, the product, staff and makeup artists. Makeup aficionados like to have the latest tools, products and information.

The Inglot colors are bright and bold. What’s wonderful about Inglot is that we have the incredible neutral colors for people that tend to go for those and then you have the option to select the bright bolds. We have something for everyone whether you’re into mattes, pearls, shimmers, frost, neutrals or color we make it fun for people. It’s not uncommon for people who are conservative that have only worn neutrals and after seeing our color range of products they are willing to experiment and add bright colors into their makeup routine.

Blue lipstick is a hot trend right now and it’s the attitude behind it. We’ve customarily worn only reds, pinks and corals. People say, “You can’t wear blue lipstick!” The minute you say that you can’t wear something, someone else will ask why not? As long as you have the confidence to pull it off and it is paired with the right color eye and cheek to balance it out it can look very fashionable. Makeup should be a fun thing. I was on set recently with an actress for a magazine cover who was willing to wear a blue lip. She was wearing this great blue gradient dress which I knew would look great with a blue lip. Everyone else on set was like no don’t do it, but I told them to trust that it would work. I took the blue lipstick and did an ombre on the lip so that it had a nice gradient effect which looked amazing. It all tied in so nicely. She loved it so much she purchased all of the blue lip products I used to ombre her lips.

Advice for aspiring makeup artists and those that would like a career in the beauty industry
If you have a passion for something, just do it. In terms of makeup when people start to say these are the rules and this is how it should be done is when you have to throw caution to the wind. If that was the case we wouldn’t be wearing blue lipstick now. Makeup is where you have to play with the products. We wouldn’t have the cat eyeliner or false eyelashes if someone hadn’t played around with makeup. There is a right way, a wrong way and a wrong way that becomes right because you played with the makeup and made it enjoyable. It’s important to experiment and have fun with makeup. When you experiment that is when you learn from your mistakes.

While it’s great to look at YouTube tutorials the person may say to do it one way. You may try it and learn that doing it that way didn’t compliment the face of the person you were working on. That is why you have to practice and develop your method. Do it because you want to experiment and try new things and learn different techniques. That is how you’re able to grow as a makeup artist. Watch videos, television, movies and cut pictures from magazines so that you can copy the look.

Come see us at Inglot and we’ll play in store and show you some of our products, tips and tricks to help you perfect your craft. We like to make it interesting and fun. Find ways to learn about the industry even though you may have limited funds and unable to enroll in a school. There are free online tutorials everywhere that you’re able to learn from. Knowledge is everywhere.

Ask a makeup artist that you enjoy their work if you can assist them on a photo shoot. You have to start somewhere and you can volunteer to sit with a makeup artist, even if it’s just washing brushes you can observe and learn from them on set. If you have a passion for it, do it. There are shoots going on all the time that you can intern with an artist.

Pro Makeup Artist Francesca Tolot Shares Her Passions and How to Get Beyoncé’s Glow

Celebrity Makeup Artist, Francesca Tolot, Image/Alberto Tolot

Francesca Tolot has shown us how she is able to turn Beyoncé’s face into the “Must Have” look for the many videos, commercials, TV, film and ad campaigns that she’s collaborated with the music icon on. Unless you’ve been living under a rock it is commonly known that Francesca Tolot is the mastermind makeup artist behind the flawless looks of Beyoncé.

Francesca Tolot was born near Venice, Italy before coming stateside. It is no surprise that her passion of painting, drawing and sculpting along with the influences of Renaissance art helped her to become the world renowned makeup artist she is today.

As a makeup lover, artist and complete beauty enthusiast myself, I was thrilled to interview Tolot since I have recreated her looks on myself and others. Tolot gave insight on working as a makeup artist, her greatest joy working as a celebrity makeup artist and tips to get Beyoncé’s glow.

Advice for Makeup Artists and Things They Should Know
You have to have some form of talent. They can teach you everything you need to know at school, but if you don’t make it your form of artistry it’s not going to work. You need to experiment and be open to learning something every day, even learning how not to do something. It’s really about being open to learn constantly because you’re never complete in the learning process. There is always room for improvement. You never stop learning. People get out of school thinking that they know everything and that is the worst attitude to have.

A Project Where You Felt That You Had “Arrived” as a Makeup Artist
I don’t think that has happened. You never really make it. There is always something else to do or something else to learn. Maybe the times when I see some good pictures of great work that made me feel proud and satisfied about what I did on that project. I never feel like “I’ve made it.”

The Greatest Joy that You Get From Creating a Look for an Individual
Usually the best case scenario is when everybody is happy and I achieved the look that everyone wanted. I’m the happiest when I feel that I created a look that I was happy with the results.

There are times when you make other people happy because of a strong request or strong idea of what they want. But then you don’t feel the same. I think when everybody is happy including me, and I feel good and proud of what I’ve done is probably the best moment.

How to Get the Beyoncé No Makeup Look Glow for Summer
To get a good glow for the face you should use the least amount of foundation possible. You want the foundation to be translucent so that you can actually see the skin. If you don’t have serious skin problems that you need to cover like pimples or discoloration it will be easier. Beyoncé has flawless skin so that makes my job easy.

For summertime you don’t want to wear too much makeup. To get the glow you want to use the least amount of makeup as possible and no powder at all, except maybe just a little in the T-zone (nose, chin and forehead).

You want to have the right amount of the natural moisture of ingredients in the foundation to make your skin glow. On top of that you just add a nice bronzer with a shimmer or some shimmery highlights onto the apple of the cheeks and the eyelids. The bronzer can go all over the face. The combination of the moisturizing agent of the foundation and the shimmering bronzer creates the glow.

Plans to Start a YouTube Channel for “How To” Re-Create Your Celebrity Looks
It is so much fun to look at those videos on YouTube. No, it’s not in my immediate plans, but as they say, never say never.

Francesca Tolot Cosmetics in the Future
I don’t know. I love the idea of designing a makeup line because I love color and mixing textures. Do I desire to see a makeup line with my name on it? Not really. I’d probably enjoy designing it for someone else more. Maybe a limited edition line of products with a makeup company or a Creative Director role would be of interest. However, I have no plans for my own cosmetics line at this time.

Francesca Tolot Book Release
Yes, actually I have a book coming out in September 2014. It’s a coffee table book with my husband Alberto Tolot. It’s not a celebrity or “How To” book. It is a beautiful coffee table book with gorgeous images with my husband who is a great photographer. We took the images from the work that we’ve done together that I think is absolutely beautiful. I hope others will think the same. Additional details of where the book will be available will be coming soon, so stay tuned.

We can’t wait for the book!

Celebrity Hairstylist Kiyah Wright on Season Finale: OWN Network’s “Love in the City”

Celeb Hairstylist KIyah Wright, Star of OWN Network's "Love in the City

Celeb Hairstylist KIyah Wright, Star of OWN Network’s “Love in the City, Image/WRB PR

Kiyah Wright is a celebrity hairstylist and Clairol Professional Brand Ambassador. This two-time Emmy Award winning hairstylist recently finished coiffing creator Tyra Banks for “America’s Next Top Model,” Cycle 21. She’s styled entertainers Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, and Brandy plus award-winning actresses Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union – just to name a few!

When she’s not collaborating with Hollywood’s A-list talent on their clothing lines, television and music projects or feature films, she’s building her own brand, Muze Hair. Muze Hair is a line of hair care products to maintain and treat the tresses, along with the very popular “Last Look” hairspray.

Kiyah shares how she paved her way to become a celebrity hairstylist, the importance of education and the season finale of her hit show on the OWN Network, “Love in the City.”

Q: You’re an accomplished celebrity hair stylist that has paved your own way. What did it take to get to your level of success?
KW: It took a lot of work, sacrifice and focus. I missed out on a lot of things such as family, weddings, having children and relationships meeting my career goals. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about those things it’s that I wanted to establish a legacy for my family.

When I look at my family the end goal doesn’t look as good and I want to change that. I want to establish generational opportunities and wealth for my siblings. That’s when you start to make an impact on your family’s life. As far as property and leaving businesses for your family members long term, that wasn’t taught to me. Thank God my mom had the desire for me to win and she encouraged me to have the drive to strive and win.

My goal is to be The Paul Mitchell of textured hair care. I have my own hair care product line that I’m also looking for investors. I want to offer an array of hair products such as my Muze Hair product line, heat tools, accessories, extensions and wigs. My goal is to provide education and teach hair stylists at the Muze Hair Academy. I’m trying to build a conglomerate and that takes time and really focusing to execute my vision.

Q: Are you still working with “America’s Next Top Model” (ANTM)?
KW: Yes, I just finished shooting ANTM working with Tyra Banks. I managed to squeeze that into my list of duties that needed to be done.

Q: Describe what a week of your life looks like with all that you have going on?
KW: I wake up daily to answer lots of emails, determine what press we’re doing for the show and photo shoots. My days go pretty late. I also have a staff and my own businesses that I have to manage and make sure those things are operating smoothly. I have a lot of things to manage on a daily basis. I’m also a Clairol Professional Color Ambassador. In that role I’m creating and shooting webisodes and editing them. It’s a lot, but I make sure that I get it all accomplished. My assistant plays a great role in ensuring that I keep it together.

Q: You’re a Clairol Professional Brand Ambassador which is a significant milestone for a hairstylist.
KW: Yes, it is. I’ve been with Clairol for 3 years and it’s a huge accomplishment. I am proud to be a part of a hair care brand like Clairol that I was raised on. It is such an established brand that I grew up with as a newbie hair stylist and they are like family. It feels good to be right at home. Clairol is supportive of all of my endeavors and they are so informative. I have really enjoyed working with them.

Q: What’s next for Kiyah Wright?
KW: In addition to “Love in the City,” wrapping, I really want to build out my product line for textured hair and establishing myself as the “Go To” brand for anyone with textured hair. We don’t have trendsetting African American brands that are doing that. I want to make all of that happen. We’re in an age of DIY (Do It Yourself) and YouTube is a big part of that. That’s why the Clairol Professional series videos are so important. Women are able to learn tips and techniques from a professionally trained hair stylist and colorist when doing their own hair at home.

Q: You recently did a makeover series, tell us more?
KW: Yes, we did a makeover series with Clairol called “Makeover Magic,” where we took everyday women giving them hair solutions and how to maintain the look. It was so rewarding and a lot of fun!

Q: Education is very important to you. How do you educate your peers?
KW: I love educating people and I think it is key in growing your business and clientele. I do classes on various hair topics.

On June 8, 2014, I have a seminar, Perfect Your Weaves and Increase Your Income” in Los Angeles. Hair extensions are big business but they need to be properly done. I want to share that knowledge so that hairstylists are getting the information and tools that they need to be successful.

We’re offering attendees a special discount on high-quality hair extensions from Princess Hair Shop to use with their clients, if they desire. If you’re using or offering poor quality hair, you’ll have dissatisfied customers in the end.

We’re starting the seminars in Los Angeles on June 8th, and adding more cities and dates. All the information to enroll and upcoming classes is available on my website.

Q: Do you find “Love in the City” this season?
KW: You’ll need to tune in Saturday, May 24th, 10 pm on the OWN Network to find out.

We’re excited to find out if Kiyah really does find love this season!

If you are up on the latest celebrity trends in the beauty industry, chances are you have heard the name Kiyah Wright.

Kiyah Wright is a two-time, Emmy-winning celebrity hairstylist with more than 15 years in the business. When she is not globe-trotting the planet on celebrity photo shoots, television shows or runways, she is based out of the trendy Warren Tricomi Salon in Los Angeles.

This business savvy hairstylist and entrepreneur juggles many responsibilities. Kiyah is the Founder of the “Muze Hair” hair care styling products including the wildly popular “Last Look” hairspray. She’s even coined the catchphrase, “Let’s get Muzed,” playing off the name of her hair products line. Kiyah aspires to give everyday women that “Hollywood Look.” Anyone that sits in Kiyah’s chair knows that they will be her “muse.”

When Wright is not in the salon, or working on set of “America’s Next Top Model,” ensuring that creator and host Tyra Banks hair is always on point, you can find her performing her duties as a brand ambassador for Clairol Professional as its celebrity colorist. In fact, Wright had just completed a Clairol marathon “Makeover Magic” session with a group of women of various hair textures – from straight to kinky and relaxed to natural.

Wright has styled the locks of entertainers and trendsetters such as Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell and Iman; Grammy-winning artists Beyonce’, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, and Brandy; plus award-winning actresses Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union – just to name a few!

As the newest cast member of the OWN Network’s docu-series, “Love in the City,” Wright shares why she decided to finally star in a series and what we can expect from the show.

Q: Did you ever think that you would be in a docu-series about your life?
KW: No, I didn’t see me being on a show. We had pitched something several years ago, but it was a makeover show. A docu-series about my life, I never thought that I would be doing this. People say to me all the time that I have a great sense of humor and that I should be on TV. It was never like I was trying to pitch a show about my life. The opportunities were coming at me constantly and I finally had to decide to do it or not. I finally made the choice to go for it.

Q: Why did you decide that you wanted to be a part of “Love in the City?”
KW: Well, we’re all really friends. Each of my cast mates (Chenoa Maxwell, Bershan Shaw and Tiffany Jones) are my friends. I was friends with Chenoa Maxwell. Then Bershan Shaw was introduced to Tiffany Jones. If you watch the first sizzle of the show, you’re able to get a good understanding of the series. There are some wild things going on and real life issues happening with each of us. We all have something crazy that’s happening in our lives and these girls are sexy and trendsetting too.

The show was originally titled “Crazy, Sexy, Life.” At the time, the show was first introduced it was a little ahead its time. When the show was first shopped around the networks were not going for something that wasn’t racy or cursing and fighting. That’s what a lot of the networks seemed to want at the time. We pitched the show and we had to come back around again. The tone of reality TV has changed. Our show is a docu-series that highlights our lives and touches on what real women go through and the issues we’re faced with. There are so many women turning 40 who are thinking about having children, surrogacy, dating younger men and facing health issues. Those are real topics that are just as dramatic and you don’t need to have a show where you’re having a drink thrown in your face.

Q: One of the clips from the show is “Kiyah Wants a Baby Daddy.” Is this a recent decision to become a mother?
KW: I’ve always wanted to be a mom. People see that I’m very career driven and goal-oriented and they are surprised that I want kids. That’s my personal desire and I’ve always said when I get that husband or that man in my life (that I want and care about) I want to have a kid. I set my goals to have a career, but I guess I didn’t goal to have my kid and family. I always knew that it was something that I wanted to do, but it wasn’t on my priority list at the time, until now as I’m turning 40. The game totally changes when you hit that age. Then you realize the clock is ticking and you start to re-evaluate your life and what’s important to you. I had to ask myself where my priorities lie. Is it really just about my career and do I want to grow old with no children, when I always wanted them? I came to the conclusion that I needed to start now, even if he’s a “Baby Daddy” and not the long-term guy for me in the end – that’s okay too. I don’t have time to play around.

Q: Medical technology today has afforded you a lot more options such as freezing your eggs, surrogacy and adoption. Is it your desire to carry your own child?
KW: Yes, I want to carry my own child and experience pregnancy. However, I do like that I have options such as surrogacy if there are any complications.

Q: What makes the cast of this show different than some of the really catty female reality shows?
KW: It is actually a docu-series about our lives and not a reality show like most TV shows that are aired. It’s not a traditional reality show where you have a group of women placed onto a cast that don’t know each other. When you do that it’s going to be a little combative and there will be friction and disagreements because there is no common thread there. The cast of ”Love in the City” is a show where we are real friends, we’ve known each other for over 10 years and the things we face dealing with everyday life issues and sharing that with the world.

Q: What can we expect to see this season on the show?
KW: There are quite a few surprises but you’ll need to tune in to find out.

Q: What’s next for you?
KW: In addition to looking forward to our show “Love in the City” I really want to build out my product line for textured hair and establishing myself as the “Go-To” brand for anyone with textured hair.
